The 15th Annual Conference on the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence River Ecosystem will highlight 50 years of hydroelectric power development and the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway on the international section of the St. Lawrence River. The conference takes place May 6 to 8 at the NavCanada Conference Centre in Cornwall, Ont.Keynote speaker Dr. James H. Thorp will present “The Riverine Ecosystem Synthesis: Theoretical Constructs and Applications to River Sustainability.”
Dr. Thorp is a senior scientist at the Kansas Biological Survey and Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Kansas. His research is focused at the community and ecosystem levels, with an emphasis on rivers. Although his research has ranged over the years from field experiments on predator-pre interactions to remote-sensing analysis of the effects of watershed disturbance on rivers, his current research focuses on two areas : the impacts of dynamic hydrogeomorphic conditions on community structure and ecosystem properties in rivers of the Great Plains; and controls of food-web complexity in freshwater ecosystems. Dr. Thorp is the author or editor of several books and about 80 journal articles. He is also president of the International Society for River Science and a member of the Editorial Board of River Research and Applications.
