New Wastewater Law for Charlottetown, Summerside

Posted on October 26, 2009

Mayor Clifford Lee is pleased that the province is honouring its commitment to make it law that all septage collected on Prince Edward Island be treated at approved wastewater treatment facilities in Summerside and Charlottetown.

“They’re enacting legislation we were promised a number of years ago,” Mayor Lee said. “We will finally be able to utilize the expansion we made to our wastewater treatment plants, for the benefit of all Islanders.”

Craig Walker, who manages the city’s water and sewer system, said the new law—which will come into effect January 1, 2010—will bring continuity to the service and a potential for long-term revenue for the city.

“It makes the whole operation and facility more sustainable,” Walker said. “The wastewater sludges applied to Prince Edward Island farmland will now be a fully stabilized and treated biosolid.”
