London, Ontario-based TrojanUV announced on October 29 that the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago has selected its newest wastewater ultraviolet light disinfection system, the TrojanUVSigna, for installation at the Terrence J. O’Brien Water Reclamation Plant in Skokie, Illinois. Designed for large scale wastewater disinfection applications, the system makes the adoption of UV disinfection easier, reduces the total cost of ownership compared to chemical disinfection, and simplifies maintenance of the treatment plant.

Trojan will be working with Chicago environmental engineering firm Greeley & Hansen on the design of the system. MWRD will manage the construction contract on the installation, and Trojan will supply 14 UV banks, giving the system a flow capacity of 450 million gallons per day. Chicago will be the first of the 30 largest wastewater treatment plants in the United States to incorporate UV technology.

“The TrojanUVSigna, with Solo Lamp Technology, is the ideal solution for large facilities who want to cost-effectively install new disinfection facilities or convert from chlorine to UV disinfection,” said President of Trojan Technologies, Marv DeVries.

The Terrence J. O’Brien Water Reclamation Plant is an activated sludge, single stage nitrification facility. The TrojanUVSigna was selected for this location based on a number of credentials, including:

– lowest number of UV lamps required
– low total installed capital cost and long-term operating cost
– suitability for seasonal operation
– system design features, and Trojan’s overall experience and support
