Five New Brunswick communities will receive funding to upgrade their water and wastewater systems, according to an Aug. 14 announcement from the province. Chateau Heights, Chemin des Huitres, Drummond, Dundee, and Saint-Léonard will all receive investments through the federal Gas Tax Fund.

“Responsible management of our water and wastewater systems is key to fostering a cleaner environment,” said Environment and Local Government Minister Danny Soucy. “We are helping local service districts to upgrade their infrastructure and improve their sustainability.”

Several Chateau Heights households that were experiencing intermittent water shortages will be added to Fredericton’s drinking water system. Similarly, 21 permanent and seasonal residents drawing from private wells in Chemin des Huitres will be supplied by the Haut-Shippagan Road watermain.

Chateau Heights, Drummond, Dundee, and Saint-Léonard will also benefit from new and extended wastewater collection services. The new services will supplement existing wastewater treatment systems in the communities.

“These improvements, made possible through the federal Gas Tax Fund, will ensure safe and clean drinking water and modern wastewater treatment services for New Brunswick residents,” said Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Bernard Valcourt.
