The City of Charlottetown’s Water and Sewer Utility is advising the public to be conscious of excessive water usage in the warmer and drier months ahead. The city issued a notice reminding citizens to take advantage of the many conservation programs that are available in Charlottetown.
“Water is not a resource that we should be taking for granted. It’s not an unlimited resource and does need to be protected and conserved in order to be plentiful for future generations,” said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee.
The Water and Sewer Utility is still accepting application from volunteers to have a water meter installed that allows for the tracking and control of water usage in their homes or businesses.
“Conservation is something we take seriously and we hope our citizens do as well,” Lee said. “Each of our departments make efforts to conserve and our utility has some great programs in place. We encourage the public to keep water conservation in mind year-round, especially as the summer draws near.”
The city offers an extensive showerhead exchange program to any utility customer who wants to replace a high-flow piece with a low-flow one. The city has also offered rebates to utility customers who purchase energy-efficient washing machines. Estimates suggest that, if all citizens took advantage of these offers, there could be savings of up to 108-million litres of water per day or more.
The City of Charlottetown also instigates mandatory seasonal water restrictions, which come into effect on June 1 in efforts to further conserve water during the warm months.
