A British Columbia-based clean-tech company, Smart Waters, is one of the latest recipients of the of the BREW (Business. Research. Entrepreneurship. In Wisconsin.) Accelerator program in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the United States.

Each year, BREW winners receive up to a $50,000 equity investment, accelerator space in the Global Water Center, business training through the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Institute for Water Business, mentorship from water industry experts, investor guidance, and support.

Smart Waters—a start-up led by Jamie Gordy, the founder and CEO —increases City resilience by harvesting rainwater and holding it indefinitely in order to provide strategic reserves for all municipal water needs. Jamie said that the idea occurred to him based on his 15 years’ experience constructing rainwater detention systems and was inspired  by the stage 4 drought in Vancouver.

“I saw the need for it, now that Vancouver is considered a drought risk city,” said Gordy.

“I was really pleased that such a professional organization would chose a small Canadian startup,” he said.

The BREW has worked with 20 water technology startups to date, and recently committed to launching 75 more over the next five years. Milwaukee, a City that brewed beer for decades, is now known for “brewing” water technology innovations that will have a substantial impact on the regional economy’s future.

The Honourable Wisconsin Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch joined the ceremony that that included graduates of the program.
