The POLIS Project on Ecological Governance has released a new report that highlights what’s needed to implement watershed-based governance in British Columbia.
The report entitled, Illumination: Insights and Perspectives for Building Effective Watershed Governance in B.C., makes the argument that the new Water Sustainability Act offers the potential for a significant shift in measures to protect water for nature, and enable alternative forms of local watershed governance, however knowledge and capacity gaps are hindering progress. The report identifies the specific gaps, and what’s needed, to turn the concepts supported by the new Act into practice.
“B.C. has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make the shift to a truly world-class watershed governance regime. It is our hope that this study, and an upcoming options paper, will chart a path towards meaningful, practical actions that will accelerate this shift and capitalize on this important window of opportunity,” said Tim Morris, co-author of the report.
