Quebec Funds Innovation Cluster to Address Wastewater in Shrimp Processing

Posted on August 9, 2016

Four Québec shrimp processing plants will benefit from financial support of phase 2 of an innovation cluster to identify treatment for wastewater. The Government of Québec contributed $100,000 to support each company’s efforts in the project in response to the wastewater disposal requirements as part of the Canada Fisheries Act.

In 2014, the companies joined a group called the Marine Resource, Science and Technology Cluster (RSTM), supported by experts from the Centre de recherche industrielle du Québec (CRIQ) and the Technopole maritime du Québec (TMQ) to develop methods to meet regulations.

Phase I of the project, conducted over the last 12 months, established a legislative and regulatory portrait in Canada and Northern Europe and identified the physico-chemical parameters that influence the quality of wastewater. This information was shared with wastewater experts to identify innovative technologies that would be suitable at each shrimp plant.

The project is part of Mesure innovation MESI-CRIQ, which makes it eligible for financing from the Ministère de l’Économie, de la Science et de l’Innovation du Québec (MESI) and the CRIQ.
