The governments of Canada and Quebec have announced $4.4 million in joint funding for two water projects in the Magdalen Islands.
Announced by the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue and Member of Parliament for Gaspésie–Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine, and Germain Chevarie, Member for Îles-de-la-Madeleine, this financial support under the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund (CWWF) will contribute to maintaining, renewing, or developing infrastructure to ensure the production and distribution of quality drinking water for residents or the proper disposal and treatment of wastewater.
The funding will support looping of the Île-du-Havre-Aubert system and the interception and treatment of wastewater in the central sector of Île du Havre-aux-Maisons.
Chevarie said, “Thanks to this important investment, the Municipality of Magdalen Islands will be able to complete important projects to meet its needs related to drinking water and wastewater treatment infrastructure. The financial support announced today clearly shows how working in partnership is improving the quality of life of our fellow citizens.”
The Government of Canada is investing almost $2.7 million for these projects, and the Government of Quebec is providing almost $1.8 million for a total joint contribution of more than $4.4 million. The municipality will provide the remainder of the funding. These projects are in addition to the three projects already announced in Gaspésie under the CWWF.
Lebouthillier said of the infrastructure investment, “These new projects on the Magdalen Islands will safeguard the environment and well-being of residents. We will continue working in close collaboration with our partners to ensure we make smart infrastructure investments that help protect the environment and preserve public health, while paving the way for economic growth and for the creation of good-paying middle-class jobs.”
The approval of the projects under the CWWF was made possible by the signing of a bilateral agreement between Canada and Quebec in July 2016, which made funding available for water projects across the province.
