Saskatchewan has announced the opening of another water supply system. Just days after the Town of Cupar opened the door to its new water treatment plant, west central Saskatchewan residents have reason to celebrate their own water victory with the opening of the Water West Regional Water Supply System. Gerry Ritz, Agriculture Minister and Member of Parliament for Battlefords – Lloydminster, was on hand to mark the completion of the project, which will improve access to clean drinking water across the region.
The five-year, $20,870,000 project expanded on the existing system, which draws water from the South Saskatchewan River. The upgrade means enhanced protection for about 7,500 people in the town of Kindersley and Rural Municipality of Snipe Lake. Of the total cost, more than $10 million came from the federal government, while Water West Pipeline Utility Inc provided the remainder.
“I’m very pleased the project has had a successful completion,” said Water West Pipeline Chairman Al Heron. “This upgrade and expansion will provide safe, secure and sustainable water to the citizens in the west central region of Saskatchewan now and in the future.”
