This month, the City of Charlottetown awarded the consulting engineering services portion of the Spring Park Combined Sewer Separation Project to the Charlottetown Office of Genivar Inc.
The Spring Park Combined Sewer Separation Project is part of the city's continuing efforts to resolve the operational and environmental issues associated with combined sewer overflows. The estimated cost of this project is $18 million.

The Province recently announced that it is once again aiming to help communities prepare for the challenges linked to climate change. The Department of Environment is offering up to $25,000 through its Climate Change Adaptation Fund.
"Nova Scotians need to prepare for the realities of climate change," said Environment Minister Sterling Belliveau in a press release. "Through this fund, we're encouraging community-based projects that help adapt to our changing climate."

A progress report released on March 23 highlights achievements of the first year of Nova Scotia's water resource management strategy, called Water for Life, which was released in December 2010.
"Nova Scotians understand the importance of clean water to our health, our environment and our economy," said Environment Minister Sterling Belliveau in a press release. "Through our water resource management strategy, we're taking steps to ensure it is carefully managed and protected."

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island has announced a three-phase plan to separate the remaining portion of its Spring Park Combined Storm and Sanitary Sewer System. When the project is complete in 2014, sanitary sewage will no longer enter Charlottetown Harbour from the city’s sanitary sewer system.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $18.8 million and the first phase will commence with a call for design engineering services and project management. Construction is projected to begin in May.

New Brunswick's provincial government has released a long-term wetland management strategy (pdf) and will implement it in phases to allow for the implementation of operational, land use, financial considerations, and public education.
"Our strategy is based on the comments received from stakeholders who have been involved in the engagement process since last spring. The Department of Environment will continue to consult with environmental groups, municipalities, developers and other government agencies and departments to develop the details and implement this strategy," said Environment Minister Margaret-Ann Blaney.

Feedback on Nova Scotia's draft coastal strategy is now available online. "The thoughtful and thorough feedback we've received on this draft strategy makes it clear to us how important the state of our coast is to Nova Scotians," said Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Sterling Belliveau.

Nova Scotia has released its new Nova Scotia Wetland Conservation Policy (PDF). With a focus on the roles wetlands play to the province's landscapes and their value to society, the policy represents a commitment to consistent management of Nova Scotia’s wetlands while allowing for sustainable economic development in surrounding communities.

The City of St. John’s will receive approximately $10 million through the 2011 Municipal Capital Works program for municipal infrastructure projects.
The City will conduct a number of street rehabilitation projects with the assistance of this funding. Sanitary and storm sewer reconstruction will occur on Hoyles Avenue and from Rennies River Bridge to Churchill Square (Phase 1) and from Churchill Square to Allandale Place (Phase 2). Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) is not happy with recent comments from Environment and Conservation Minister Ross Wiseman.
In a press release, MNL president Harry Hallett, Mayor of the Town of Leading Tickles, rejected comments that Wiseman made regarding the role of municipalities and safe drinking water. The release claims that Wiseman's comments held municipalities largely responsible for a portion of the more than 200 boil-water advisories currently active in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Two Canadian water projects received honours at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' (FCM) 2011 Sustainable Communities Awards yesterday in Victoria, British Columbia.
"This year's award winners are prime examples of the type of environmental leadership communities are showing on the front lines of sustainable development in Canada," said Hans Cunningham, president of FCM and director of the Regional District of Central Kootenay, B.C.
