WWF Urges Government to Protect Athabasca

Today, WWF-Canada released Securing Environmental Flows in the Athabasca River, a report that urges government agencies to demonstrate their commitment to protecting Alberta’s lower Athabasca River over the long term. The report picks up from the close of the Phase 2 Framework Committee (P2FC), a multi-stakeholder group with representation from the Alberta and federal governments, a First Nation, a Métis association, industry, and environmental organizations, including WWF-Canada, convened to develop recommendations for a new water management plan for the lower Athabasca. North 60° Petro Fined for Hydrocarbon Discharge into Yukon River

North 60° Petro Limited pleaded guilty on November 12, 2010, in Whitehorse Territorial Court for failing to comply with an Environment Canada Inspector's Direction requesting that the company stop discharging hydrocarbons into the Yukon River from North 60° Petro Bulk Terminal site in Whitehorse, Yukon. Failure to comply with an Inspector's Direction is a violation of the Fisheries Act, which prohibits the discharge of deleterious substances into fish bearing waters. FCM Supports Yellowknife Water Wastage Study

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) has announced a Green Municipal Fund (GMF) grant for the City of Yellowknife. The City is investing the $90,000 in funding to conduct a feasibility study aimed at evaluating options to upgrade the sewer and water mains at Northlands Condo Corporation to current municipal standards. The underground water and sewer systems in Northlands Condo Corporation, an affordable downtown neighbourhood in Yellowknife, have reached the end of their useful life and surpassed their 25-year life expectancy. $10.9M for Water in Rankin Inlet

BioteQ Completes Yukon Treatment Plant

BioteQ Environmental Technologies Inc., which provides treatment of industrial wastewater, has completed construction of the Minto Water Treatment Plant at the Minto Mine in the Canadian Yukon. The company provided plant design, procurement, and construction within five months, delivering the plant ahead of schedule and within budget. Draft NWT Water Stewardship Strategy Released

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada have released the draft Northwest Territories Water Stewardship Strategy. The draft strategy promotes an ecosystem-based approach to integrated watershed management in order to improve water stewardship in the NWT, and reflects the deep and fundamental relationship between residents and the waters of the NWT. BioteQ Signs Contract for Seasonal Whitehorse Plant

Vancouver-based BioteQ Environmental Technologies, Inc. will design and build a water treatment plant in Whitehorse at the Minto copper mine owned by Minto Explorations Limited. BioteQ will provide process design, engineering and project management services on a fee basis. Arctic Waters Further Protected

To better protect Canadian Arctic waters from ship-source pollution, Transport Minister John Baird today announced that Bill C-3, an Act to amend the Arctic Waters Pollution Prevention Act, came into force on August 1, 2009. The amended Act also allows Canada to exercise greater control over these waters. The updated Act strengthens Canada's ability to guard against pollution from ships in an expanded area. Nunavut Gets Flood Relief

The federal government will cost share eligible territorial expenditures incurred by Nunavut through the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements for flood damage caused by snowmelt and heavy rains in June 2008. Over a twelve-hour period on June 8 and 9, 2008, accelerated snowmelt and heavy rains caused flooding in the community of Pangnirtung. This resulted in the erosion of the permafrost which supported the bridge abutments on the Duval River. Dawson Signs with Corix

The City of Dawson and Yukon government announced yesterday that a contract has been signed with Vancouver-based Corix Water Systems for the design and construction of a wastewater treatment plant for Dawson.
