BioteQ Commences Raglan Operations

BioteQ Environmental Technologies Inc. has announced that it has commenced water treatment operations for the 2009 season at its Raglan plant, located in Nunavik (Northern Quebec) at Xstrata Nickel's Raglan Mine. BioteQ is responsible for operating its proprietary ChemSulphide plant, as well as the Spoon lime treatment plant at the site, treating water from surface operations to meet strict water quality criteria for discharge to the environment. Canada and Yukon Coordinate on Farms

The governments of Canada and Yukon have signed off on an almost $5-million investment for Yukon farmers with the launch of a new suite programs under Growing Forward. The funding and programs are a result of new bilateral agreements that reflect a five-year commitment to help position Canadian farmers for success. $10M for Cleaner Drinking Water in Yukon

Canada and Yukon will be working together to upgrade and improve water treatment systems in the territory, Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq and Minister of Community Services in Yukon Archie Lang announced this week. Families in Ross River, Carcross, Marsh Lake, Carcross/Tagish First Nation, Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, the Village of Haines Junction, and the Village of Teslin will receive new water treatment initiatives. CCME Talks Strategy in Whitehorse

Meeting yesterday in Whitehorse to discuss issues such as climate change, federal, provincial and territorial environment ministers recognized the work done to date in developing the Canada-wide Strategy for the Management of Municipal Wastewater Effluent by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME). Canada Moves to Protect Arctic Waters

Transport Minister John Baird has introduced legislation in the House of Commons to enhance Canada's sovereignty over Arctic waters and protect them from pollution. Under the proposed legislation, Canada will have greater and more effective control over marine activity in the Canadian Arctic while enhancing environmental protection in Canada's North. Residents in the Takhini North neighbourhood of Whitehorse will have to fork over at least $1 million to help cover a $9-million upgrade to its water and sewage system, as well as pay thousands of dollars more to hook up their home plumbing to the new system, reports CBC News. Canada and Yukon Fund Water Supply System in Haines Junction

Whitehorse, YT- Last week, the federal government announced funding for improvements to Haines Junction's water supply system in Yukon. The Village of Haines Junction will receive $245,267 under the Canada-Yukon Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF). This water system project will improve the pumping capacity of local wells and will include a water testing station. Michael Miltenberger says a way already exists to deal with the preservation of quality and flow of water in the Mackenzie River basin, reports the Northern News Services Online.
