Brighton council to forge ahead with new sewage treatment plant

BRIGHTON, Ont. – The municipality of Brighton, Ont. Is moving ahead with the construction of a new sewage treatment plant despite a rise in costs.

At a recent council meeting Brighton’s council learned that design costs alone could increase by $400,000. The new facility is expected to cost $41 million. The municipality has a grant application in at the provincial government for $30 million, with the remainder of the project to be paid for by water sewer rates, development cost charges, and a $6.5-million loan to bridge the funding gap.

Currently, Brighton uses aerated lagoons and a man-made storm pond to treat sewage. Over the past couple of decades, the existing facility has had ammonia nitrogen level problems which have yet to be solved. The new facility will be located on the same property.
